The housing crisis across Canada has already reached a critical point, with affordability slipping further out of reach for many. Now, proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum threaten to make things even worse. Industry experts warn that these tariffs will raise construction costs, slow down projects, and add pressure to a market that is already struggling to meet demand.
At a time when we need to build more homes quickly and affordably, adding extra costs for homebuilders is a step in the wrong direction. The industry is already dealing with labor shortages, rising interest rates, and supply chain disruptions. Higher material costs will only push homeownership further out of reach, especially for first-time buyers and middle-income families.
Massive Canada is committed to advancing the use of mass timber products within BC. By ensuring local production remains viable, we can reduce reliance on costly imports, lower construction costs, and speed up housing development. Mass timber is a strong alternative to steel and concrete. Wood construction and prefabrication offer environmental benefits such as lower carbon emissions and improved energy efficiency in buildings.
Now more than ever, BC must invest in homegrown solutions that support the housing sector. A strong mass timber industry in the province will create jobs, promote sustainability, and, most importantly, help build the homes we desperately need.
